St Petersburg: Russian Revolution Tour Itinerary
Saint Petersburg, Petrograd, Leningrad... the former capital of Russia has been through a lot over the past few hundred years. Begin your journey through time meeting your guide underneath Alexander Column in the centre of Palace Square.
Firstly, you'll make your way over to the majestic façade of the Hermitage Museum, located in an imposing building known as the Winter Palace, after which this elegant city centre square is named. The sprawling green-and-white palace was the official residence of the Russian Emperors until 1917, when it was stormed by the Red Army.
As you take in the details of its architecture, your guide will reveal the historic events that the Winter Palace played host to in the run up to the Russian Revolution, from the Bloody Sunday Massacre of 1905 to it being taken over by the Bolsheviks in October 1917.
The attack on the Winter Palace was initiated by a signal: a canon fired by the Aurora cruiser, which will be the next stop on your Russian Revolution tour of Saint Petersburg. After marvelling at the historic warship, which is now used as a museum, you'll make your way to the Field of Mars and the Yusupov Palace. Discover the links that these two important sites have to the Bolshevik Revolution and to the famous figure known as Rasputin before your tour comes to an end.
